The Week in Spandex – Justice League details, DC Films and Marvel Phase Three updates, Spider-Man movie universe, Deadpool 2 start date, comic faithful X-Men concept art and more

June 25, 2016 by Gary Collinson

…With James Gunn and the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 confirmed for Comic-Con next month alongside Doctor Strange, Marvel released two updated synopses for the Phase Three releases [read them here]; meanwhile, on the Doctor Strange front we also found out the identity of Mads Mikkselsen’s villain thanks to the description for Marvel Minimates action figures [no spoilers, but you can find out who he’s playing here], and LEGO fans may want to check out promo images of the upcoming Marvel Super Heroes Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum set [see here]…

…With Thor: Ragnarok set to begin filming on July 4th, some spy photos have arrived online showing what appears to be Asgardian buildings under construction on Australia’s Gold Coast; take a look here…

…42nd Annual Saturn Awards – where Ant-Man was honoured with the award for Best Comic-to-Film Motion Picture – director Peyton Reed spoke about the 2018 sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp and being the first Marvel movie to feature a female character in its title: “It’s something we’re excited about. For me as a comic nerd, I always thought of Ant-Man and Wasp as a team and that’s a lot of what the second movie is really about is how they work together, what their personal and professional relationships are like. To show her finally fully formed in this movie is really exciting. We really get to introduce this character into that universe. I mean we’ve introduced the character, but we haven’t seen her with her full power set and everything, so to me she’s not a supporting character in this movie. It’s every bit as much her movie as it is Scott Lang’s.” Reed also discussed what comic books he’s been reading for inspiration, and you can see his response here…

…Jessica Jones showrunner Melissa Rosenberg has been talking about the restrictions she had imposed from Marvel for last year’s acclaimed Netflix series: “No F-bombs. And if anyone was going to say “fuck,’ it would be Jessica Jones. Sometimes I was just like, ‘Please, just let me put one.’ And… never. But, what’s funny is people have said, ‘She didn’t say fuck? I could have sworn she did.’ That’s ’cause Ritter can deliver ‘fuck’ with her face. Her look says it. She could be saying ‘potato.’ And the other thing is, there’s sex to some degree that wasn’t really any nudity. But then people are saying, ‘There was no nudity? Wait a minute, that was really graphic sex.’ It was all about the attitude, how it’s shot, how it’s acted with raw lust.” She then went on to discuss the genre tropes she strived to avoid with the series, adding that: “[Jessica] was never going to play the honey pot. She was never going to put on the tight bandage dress and heels and go and seduce the guy she needs information from. That was just never going to happen…”

…Marvel released an image of a promotional train for the fourth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. which will be doing the rounds in San Diego next month, prompting speculation that Ghost Rider could be set for a role in the ABC series due to the inclusion of a flaming chain. It’s unlikely however, given that said chain has been seen in the third season as the weapon of the Inhuman character Wildfire…

…Be sure to check out Anghus Houvouras’ MCU-themed op-ed for this week, as he asks ‘Why Are the Stakes in Marvel Movies So Low?‘…

…And we also have a couple of clips from this weekend’s Marvel animated shows on Disney XD in ‘Agent Web’ from Ultimate Spider-Man vs. The Sinister 6 and ‘Fox on the Run’ from Guardians of the Galaxy…

…Moving on to the X-Verse now and 20th Century Fox’s X-Men: Apocalypse finally crossed the $500 million mark at the box office this week, pushing its total to $514 million by close of play on Thursday (and with 71% of that haul coming from the international markets). Meanwhile, some unused concept art arrived online, including the above shots of Tye Sheridan’s Cyclops and Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique, as well as a much more comic book-faithful design for Oscar Isaac’s Apocalypse which you can see here…

…As filming continues on Wolverine 3, Fox has put out a casting call for extras in the New Orleans area to play drug dealers, prostitutes, homeless people and cartel gang members. So, if you’re nearby, and you look like a rather unsavory character, you could possibly find yourself starring alongside Hugh Jackman in his X-Men swansong…

…Producer Simon Kinberg has offered a brief update on the status of Deadpool 2, which Fox is hoping to have in production early in 2017: “he guys, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, are working on the script, and we hope to have a script very soon. I can only tell you that it’s going extremely well and that’s about all I will tell you about it. We want it to be discovered the way that we used to watch movies a long time ago when you didn’t know everything about them before you went to go see them…”

…And finally, head on over to our YouTube channel – or watch the video at the bottom of this page – for the latest episode of FMTV’s Scooperhero News, where Luke and Oli wrap up all the big talking points in the world of screen superheroes.
