The Week in Spandex – Deadpool/Wolverine, Logan, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange 2, The Punisher, Wonder Woman, Justice League, Captain Underpants and more

December 31, 2016 by Gary Collinson

…Moving on to the DC Extended Universe now and a new image has arrived online from the first of Warner Bros.’ two DC films releases for 2017, Wonder Woman, which sees Gal Gadot’s Amazon Princess racing into action in No Man’s Land; check it out here…

…Wonder Woman will of course be followed in November by Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and it seems that Batman and Superman won’t have quite resolved all of their differences, with Henry Cavill stating that: “There’s pretty much an argument between [Superman] and Batman as to who is the leader [of the team].” Expect this argument to lead to verbal sparring, rather than the full-blown fisticuffs of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice…

…Superman may also find himself facing off against another adversary, with Dwayne Johnson setting tongues wagging by sharing a photo of himself and Henry Cavill complete with the caption “#DCWorldsWillCollide”. Given that Johnson is attached to play Black Adam in the Shazam movie, this naturally sparked speculation about a possible appearance from the Man of Steel, or a potential crossover movie further down the line…

…Supergirl returns to The CW on January 23rd, and you can take a look at a clip from the Kevin Smith-directed midseason premiere ‘Supergirl Lives’ here, while this week has also brought word that Livewire (Brit Morgan) and Metallo (Frederick Schmidt) will be making their return in the second half of the season…

…The CW has been gearing up for the return of The Flash on January 24th with the release of a batch of promotional images and a clip from the midseason premiere ‘Borrowing Problems from the Future’ [see here and here], while voice actor David Sobolov has revealed that Gorilla Grodd will be making his return to the show at some point during 2017…

…With Arrow returning from its winter break next month, The CW has released a trailer for the midseason premiere ‘Who Are You?’. Watch it here, although it’s pretty spoilery so proceed with caution…

…George Lucas is heading to DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, with Matt Angel (Grimm) set to portray a young version of the Star Wars creator in the upcoming midseason premiere of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, titled ‘Raiders of the Lost Art’. “Because of circumstances, the time aberration in episode 209 is George Lucas quits film school,” states executive producer Marc Guggenheim. “As a result, he never makes Star Wars or Raiders of the Lost Ark. As a result, Ray, who became an engineer because of Star Wars, and Nate, who became a historian because of Raiders, slowly start to lose their brilliance, because those things that inspired them to become who they are didn’t exist. We were watching a cut of it, and I said to Greg Berlanti that 209 is either going to be the episode where we’ll say that the show found a new gear in terms of how zany it can be, or it’s the episode that’s going to get us all fired,” he continued. “It really is. You’re laughing out loud, I think with it, but it’s like, ‘Are we really doing this?’ It’s the ’70s bar fight on steroids. The whole episode is that level of crazy…”

…Fox has teased the return of Cameron Monaghan’s Jerome with an official synopsis for the midseason premiere of Gotham season three ‘Ghosts’ which reads: “Falcone places a hit on Gordon after learning that he shot Mario. Gordon and Bullock discover a follower of Jerome (guest star Cameron Monaghan), who plans to bring him back to life. Meanwhile, Penguin spirals out of control before the biggest television interview of his Mayoral career, and Bruce and Selina deal with Selina’s mom’s return to Gotham in the all-new “Mad City: Ghosts” episode of GOTHAM airing Monday, Jan. 16…”

…Warner Bros. has released a new image from The LEGO Batman Movie featuring the Dark Knight donning one of his more ridiculous Batsuits [see here], while we’ve also got some promotional images for a couple of special LEGO tie-in polybags [see here]…

…Fans of Tim Burton’s Batman Returns may be interested in a batch of promotional images for NECA’s fantastically-detailed 1:4 scale Oswald Cobblepot figure from the 1992 sequel, which you can see here…

…The LEGO Batman Movie isn’t the only animated superhero movie set to hit the big screen in 2017, as Sony will also unleash Captain Underpants, and this week has brought the first official image from the animated movie featuring the titular superhero (voiced by Ed Helms) alongside Harold (Thomas Middleditch) and George (Kevin Hart); check it out here…

…And finally, I’d like to wish every reader a very Happy New Year, and here’s to a stacked 2017 of superhero movies in Logan (March), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (May), Wonder Woman (June), Spider-Man: Homecoming (July), Thor: Ragnarok (November) and Justice League (November). Let us know which you’re most looking forward to seeing in the comments below.
