James Mangold on why Mister Sinister wouldn’t fit with Logan

January 22, 2017 by Gary Collinson

On the director’s commentary for X-Men: Apocalypse, director Bryan Singer and producer Simon Kinberg discussed the post credit scene of last year’s mutant superhero blockbuster, confirming  that it was a set-up for the upcoming Wolverine solo movie Logan.

Given that the scene in question name dropped Essex Corp., many assumed that we’d be seeing Nathaniel Essex – a.k.a. Mister Sinister – making his debut in the X-Men movie franchise this March, only for director James Mangold to debunk that theory on Twitter. And now, speaking to CinemaBlend, Mangold has revealed why a villain like Sinister simply doesn’t fit with the tone they are going for with Logan.

“Now that you’ve seen some of the movie, I think [what] you get a better sense of is, that’s exactly the kind of thing this movie avoids,” said Mangold. “Meaning, the kind of operatic highly-costumed, stroboscopic villainy… that’s not in this movie. Everything is kind of as real as we can make it. The movie is trying to kind of take a step backward from that kind of spectacle, so that we get another kind of gain, you know. There’s that loss, but the gain is that the movie feels extremely real and is — as one person who saw the film said to me, ‘I feel like I could go down the street and run into that Wolverine.’ Meaning that this is in my world, not some shiny other world. This is actually taking place in my world.”

In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.

Logan is being helmed by The Wolverine director James Mangold and will see Hugh Jackman joined in the cast by Patrick Stewart as Professor X, along with new additions Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, Stephen Merchant, Dafne Keen, Eriq La Salle, Elizabeth Rodriguez and Elise Neal. It is set for release on March 1st in the UK and March 3rd in North America.
