Patty Jenkins directing Superman, The Mummy bombs, Tom Hardy in Aladdin and more – Weekend News Roundup

June 12, 2017 by admin

PATTY JENKINS 4 SUPERMAN

Having scored the best-reviewed DCEU entry with Wonder Woman – which dropped only 45% in its second week – director Patty Jenkins has been talking about other characters she’d like to tackle. In a Reddit AMA, Jenkins told her fans, “It’s no secret that I love Superman but right now I’m just happy doing Wonder Woman.” The Man of Steel sequel is still without a director, but Jenkins will likely have her hands full with Wonder Woman 2. THEN THERE’S ALL THE RUNNING…. AND SCREAMING…

While it got good reviews upon its release, there were those who felt Jurassic World was not scary enough. However original-director-turned-producer Colin Trevorrow has said that the scares will grow in Jurassic World 2. “J.A Bayona is very good at [creating scares],” states Trevorrow. “There are things that he’ll just do with a shadow, or a rustling curtain on a wall. He’s so tapped into that kind of fear, especially the fear through the eyes of child. Which, you know, he and I are just simpatico. We may be the mirrors of each other. It is by far the most satisfying collaboration of my life.” Read more here.

THE MUMMY BOMBS AND SCORES

It was a mixed bag of news for Universal Studio’s The Mummy, the first step in their Dark Universe. The reviews weren’t great, and the film bombed domestically with just $32 million. While hardly a disastrous number, it is lower than all three of the Brendan Fraser movies. However in the good news column, The Mummy is the largest international opening for a Tom Cruise-led movie, and Universal were banking on the film performing better overseas due to the star’s appeal. MAVERICK’S VOLLEYBALLS

Speaking of Tom Cruise, and the star has been talking about Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel to the 1980s classic. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Cruise promised that the oft-mocked volleyball scene could make a reappearance in the sequel. “There’s gonna be jets – very fast jets. There’s gonna be an aircraft carrier, maybe two. And a wide range of jets. It’s gonna have music… We have a soundtrack. There’s gonna be actors in it. [And a] motorcycle – definitely [a] motorcycle. [There] may be a volleyball scene. Maybe. We’ll see. I have not told anyone in the world as much as I’ve just told you right now.” Read more here.

ALADDIN RUMOURS

A new rumour came out about Guy Ritchie’s live-action Aladdin, and it suggests that the director is looking to cast Tom Hardy in the role of Jafaar. However, this rumour does come from UK tabloid dirt-rag The Sun, known for constantly making up stories and printing lies. So, take this with a pinch of salt. Read more here.

CAP IN AVENGERS 4

It’s no secret that Chris Evans is looking to hang up the shield as Captain America in Avengers 4, and the star has been talking about why he extended his contract for the fourth team-up of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. “I had six films in my Marvel contract, so I could have said after the third Avengers I was done, but they wanted to make the third and fourth Avengers films as a two-parter,” said Evans. “They said they had so many other characters to fit in – Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Ant Man – and couldn’t get them all into one movie… It made sense. It’s going to wrap everything up.” Read more here.
