Venom producer dodges Spider-Man questions, Riz Ahmed’s role reportedly revealed

December 23, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Ever since Sony announced its plans to launch a series of Spider-Man spinoff movies – beginning with Venom and Silver and Black – there’s been questions and confusion as to how these movies will fit in alongside Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, who as we all know is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to a deal between Sony and Marvel Studios.

Following much back and forth between producer Amy Pascal and Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, the best we could work out is that Marvel would not consider the spin-offs part of the MCU, whereas Sony would view them as taking place “in the same reality” as Spider-Man: Homecoming (but not the rest of the MCU?), albeit without the involvement of Spider-Man himself.

Confused? Well the latest comments from Matt Tolmach won’t clear things up too much, with the producer refusing to be drawn on whether Peter Parker exists in the Venom movie world when asked by MTV News.

“We’re making a Venom movie, is what I’m going to say to you,” he replied. “A Venom movie, with Tom Hardy, and I think you will be very pleased… We’re making a Venom movie, and I’m excited for people to explore it, and find out what that is.”

Tolmach also went on to praise Tom Hardy, who is taking on the role of Eddie Brock, stating that: “Tom, it’s like a master class watching him act every day, and he’s such a risk-taker. And he loved this character from the day that we first met with him. My partner, Avid Arad, and I, we found someone who just believes in this character entirely, and yet every day pushes it to a place that us mere mortals would never expect it to go.”

Meanwhile, Atlanta Filming has seemingly revealed Riz Ahmed’s role in the movie, and no – it’s not Carnage, or The Chameleon.

Dr. Drake refers to the character of Dr. Carlton Drake, who – in the comic book storyline Venom: Lethal Protector, which the movie is using as its inspiration – is the head of the Life Foundation, responsible for the creation of five ‘offspring’ from the symbiote, who Venom ultimately has to face in a climactic showdown.

Directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), Venom is set for release on October 5th 2018 and features a cast that includes Tom Hardy, Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, Woody Harrelson, Jenny Slate, Reid Scott and Scott Haze.
