With hits like The Conjuring, Get Out, Happy Death Day, and 10 Cloverfield Lane — just to name a few — the horror genre feels truly revitalized these days. This trend seems set to continue into the new year, and the director of Insidious: The Last Key has a theory for horror’s rise in popularity. During a Los Angeles press junket for Insidious: The Last Key, director Adam Robitel offers his explanation for why the horror genre has had such a spike in popularity over the last few years (via CinemaBlend):
“Well speaking to larger horror as having a moment, because we’re seeing larger movies like Marvel and then everything else in the middle has gone away, people want to be scared in a crowd and a catharsis so I think that’s the reason at least horror in general is here.”
It’s certainly an exciting time to be a horror fan. You can start 50 shared comic-book universes, and horror will still always have a place. Honestly, it doesn’t feel like too long ago that the most fans could look forward to was a Platinum Dunes reboot, or a direct-to-video sequel to a 20-40 year old film. With Danny McBride’s Halloween reboot entering production this year, it will be interesting to see where the genre ends up by 2019.
