Margot Robbie received death threats over Harley Quinn casting

January 5, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Although Suicide Squad was met with negative reviews and a mixed response from the audience, one person who escaped much of the criticism was Margot Robbie, who took on the role of the fan favourite villain Harley Quinn. While the majority seemed pleased with her portrayal, it seems there were a few crackpots out there who decided to express their displeasure by sending the actress death threats.

“You’re about to be in a comic book film; now here’s the worst-case scenario of how big and scary it can get,” Robbie told THR when asked about the pitfalls of fame. “There’s just all this stuff you learn along the way, like, when you get those death threats, it’s [smart] to have a security team do a background check on whoever sent them to see if there is any past history of violence because you’ll need to know whether you need security to go to certain events. And every time you do a background check, it’s going to cost $2,000, so take that into consideration when you’re getting yourself into this.”

It’s one thing to be passionate, but when you’re resorting to sending death threats over a superhero movie, you really ought to have a serious word with yourself.

Robbie, who can currently be seen as disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding in I, Tonya, is expecting to reprise the role of Harley Quinn in 2018, although it’s not quite clear whether this will be for Suicide Squad 2, or one of Warner’s other Harley-themed DC projects such as Gotham City Sirens, The Joker and Harley Quinn, or the planned solo movie.
