Paramount and Hasbro to reboot Transformers after Bumblebee movie, Transformers 6 pulled from slate

February 18, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Back in 2015, Paramount and Hasbro recruited a star studded writers room to plot out the future of the Transformers movie franchise, resulting in last year’s Transformers: The Last Knight – Michael Bay’s fifth instalment – as well as the upcoming spinoff Bumblebee: The Movie, directed by Travis Knight, and up to 14 other potential projects.

Well, it seems that Bumblebee will mark the end of the current Transformers Bay-verse, as Hasbro has revealed at Toy Fair that the as-yet-untitled Transformers 6 has been pulled from the upcoming slate, and the franchise will be rebooted, with no further Transformers movies planned for release between now and 2021 at the earliest.

The news is perhaps not too surprising; despite the five movies grossing almost $4.4 billion between them, the films have been mauled by critics, while Transformers: The Last Knight hit a box office low for the series with $605.4 million worldwide – a far cry from the $1.1 billion hauls of Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Transformers: Age of Extinction.

Apparently, Hasbro will also have a much greater input as to the next wave of Transformers movies, so it remains to be seen whether any of the ideas from the writers room will be retained, or if things will be starting completely from scratch.

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.

Bumblebee: The Movie is directed by Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings), and stars Hailee Steinfeld (Edge of Seventeen), Pamela Adlon (Better Things), John Cena (Daddy’s Home 2), Stephen Schneider (Broad City), Jorge Lendeborg Jr. (Spider-Man: Homecoming), Jason Drucker (Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul), Kenneth Choi (American Crime Story), Ricardo Hoyos (Degrassi: Next Class), Abby Quinn (Landline), Rachel Crow (Deidra & Laney Rob a Train), Grace Dzienny (Zoo) and John Ortiz (Kong: Skull Island). It is set for release on December 21st 2018.
