Mike Colter talks Luke Cage season 2 and reflects on the first season

April 7, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Having premiered season two of Jessica Jones last month, Netflix puts the spotlight back on Luke Cage this June as Mike Colter’s Power Man returns for his own second season.

Colter has been chatting to Empire’s new magazine Pilot TV as part of its cover story on the Marvel show, revealing that things are looking up for Luke as we head into the second season and discussing how his character has developed.

“Yeah, everything seems wonderful, he’s got a girlfriend, all thumbs up. What could go wrong, right?” states Colter. “But Luke is his own worst enemy, and that’s something I enjoy playing about him, because he doesn’t necessarily understand the results of his actions. He’s fallible and he makes mistakes. He’s got an edge, he’s got a chip on his shoulder, he’s got to discover his own popularity and enjoy it a bit. He’s learning on the fly what it is to be someone everybody recognises, to be someone everyone in Harlem looks to for answers. It’s a lot of responsibility.”

Colter also reflected on the first season, and criticism that it went down hill with the death of Mahershala Ali’s Cottonmouth: “It was a great try. Some people enjoy the full season. Some really felt the second part was not as strong as the first. And I get both…but you’ve got to take a chance to make your series different, and I thought it was commendable. If people thought it was a miss, that’s fine. We have a different approach for the next season.”

After clearing his name, Luke Cage has become a celebrity on the streets of Harlem with a reputation as bulletproof as his skin. But being so visible has only increased his need to protect the community and find the limits of who he can and can’t save. With the rise of a formidable new foe, Luke is forced to confront the fine line that separates a hero from a villain.

Luke Cage season 2 is set to arrive on Netflix on June 22nd and features a cast that includes Mike Colter (Luke Cage), Simone Missick (Misty Knight), Rosario Dawson (Claire Temple), Alfre Woodard (Mariah Dillard), Theo Rossi (Shades), Finn Jones (Iron Fist), Thomas Q. Jones (Comanche), Gabrielle Dennis (Tilda Johnson), Mustafa Shakir (John McIver/Bushmaster), Reg E. Cathey (James Lucas) and Anabella Sciorra (Rosalie Carbone).
