New adaptation of Stephen King’s Firestarter finds a director

June 30, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

It seems that not a week goes by lately without news of a new Stephen King project, and sure enough Variety is reporting that Fatih Akin (In the Fade) is set to direct a new adaptation of King’s classic novel Firestarter.

Published in 1980, Firestarter follows Andy McGee and his young daughter Charlie, a nine-year old girl who has inherited pyrokinetic abilities from her parents after they participated in an experiment during college which resulted in them developing telepathy. Father and daughter find themselves on the run from the government, who want to weaponise Charlie and her firestarting powers

The new film is being produced by Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions, along with Akiva Goldsman, who was previously attached to direct. Scott Teems (Rectify) has written the script.

Firestarter was previously adapted as a movie in 1984, with Mark L. Lester (Commando) directing David Keith and Drew Barrymore in the roles of Andy and Charlie.

Just last week, it was announced that filming is underway on both It: Chapter Two and Pet Sematary, while we also got word that A Quiet Place screenwriters Scott Beck and Bryan Woods are set to adapt King’s short story The Boogeyman. Other adaptations in the works include  Doctor Sleep, In the Tall Grass, The Gingerbread Girl, The Long Walk, The Tommyknockers, and The Bone Church, while we also have the upcoming Castle Rock anthology series and a second season of Mr. Mercedes incoming.
