DC Extended Universe officially titled ‘Worlds of DC’? Not quite…

July 22, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Despite the fact we’re five years in to Warner Bros.’ shared DC universe, the studio is yet to officially announce a title for its Justice League-affiliated series, with ‘DC Extended Universe’ a term that was coined by a journalist before becoming the accepted name for the franchise.

In the wake of Justice League’s underperformance, the behind-the-scenes shake-up at DC Films, and the upcoming launch of non-DCEU standalone movies, it had been rumoured that Warner Bros. would take the opportunity to “rebrand” its cinematic universe at the San Diego Comic-Con yesterday.

Although we did get trailers for Shazam! and Aquaman, and fans in attendance were treated to some first footage from Wonder Woman 1984, the studio kept its other plans firmly under wraps – presumably wishing to avoid a repeat of October 2014 when it announced a slate of ten DC films, only for several to find themselves stuck in development hell.

While this rebranding never came, numerous reports are circulating that during the Comic-Con panel, Warner Bros. “officially” announced its Cinematic Universe – or Cinematic Multiverse, given the ‘Elseworlds’ movie plans such as Joker – was going by the name ‘Worlds of DC’.

However, as Batman-News points out on Twitter, there’s been no official press release from Warner Bros. using the terms ‘Worlds of DC’, nor was there any official announcement beyond the below banner, which was more than likely just a marketing term for the panel as opposed to an “official” rebranding…

I think people are mistaking "Worlds of DC" as an official name for the DCEU.

To me, it seems like it was just WB's way of introducing 3 very different movies (#WW84, #Shazam, #Aquaman). I don't think they were trying to name a universe here. pic.twitter.com/IivKqbvzl1

So, until we hear otherwise from Warner Bros. or DC Films, we’ll be sticking with the term DC Extended Universe. Still, on the off chance they are going with Worlds of DC, let us know what you make of the name in the comments below…
