Playtime and Animal Kingdom have announced that Matt Sobel (Take Me to the River) is set to direct an English-language remake of the critically acclaimed 2014 Austrian horror Goodnight Mommy.
The original film was directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, who will serve as executive producers on the remake, and follows two young twin boys who arrive at their mother’s isolated lake house to find her face covered in gauze after what she says is recent cosmetic surgery. However, the boys soon come to suspect that the woman under the bandages isn’t really their mother.
“My favorite films are those that invite the audience to step inside their protagonist’s journey,” Sobel tells Deadline. “Whether fear of abandonment or the dreadful realization that those closest to us may not be who they seem, our re-imagining of Goodnight Mommy aims to create an immersive nightmare, with visceral sensations front and center.”
Filming on Goodnight Mommy is set to get underway in 2019, with David Kaplan (It Follows) producing and sobel directing from a script by Kyle Warren.
