Why Marvel’s Daredevil should end with Season 3

November 23, 2018 by Thomas Roach

Thomas Roach thinks Marvel’s Daredevil should end with season 3 (warning: spoilers follow)…

Over the past few weeks, some fans have been worried about Netflix’s Daredevil being cancelled by the streaming service, due to the fact that both Luke Cage and Iron Fist have been axed by the service. Daredevil season 3 has had great reviews and I myself have nothing but praise for the latest season of the show.

According to data, each of the Marvel Netflix shows have dropped in popularity, meaning mean the streaming service needs to rethink if it is worth funding and developing these shows. As Daredevil has received such great reviews and there seems to be a loud majority on the internet speaking out over the thought of its cancellation, we can assume season 4 will be greenlit by Netflix. Vincent D’Onofrio, who plays Wilson Fisk on the show, stated he doesn’t think it will be cancelled, and showrunner Erik Oleson revealed this week that he has pitched his idea for season 4 to Netflix. But, is a fourth season really necessary? Or would it be better for the show to go out now on such a high?

As I have stated, I have nothing but praise for Daredevil and I believe it is not only one of the best superhero TV shows, but one of the best TV shows in general. Its dark and gritty realism is far more appealing to me than what we get in the Marvel movies. Every part of the show is strong -, great characters, impressive stories, extraordinary cinematography, it is nothing but brilliant. I even think Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk is the best portrayal of any Marvel villain to date. Despite all this, good stories don’t need to last forever. Many shows have ended on a high note rather than risk getting cancelled, and I feel that season 3 would be the perfect place to end the show.

Actor Charlie Cox, who plays Matt Murdock/Daredevil in the show, recently stated he was unsure if season 4 would happen: “At this point, I don’t know if there’s any intention of us doing more seasons. But were that to be the case, I think there’s an interesting challenge for the writers, because I don’t think we can do another season where Matt is so isolated, so alone, and so broken and angry. I think in order to avoid being a broken record, we’re going to have to find a Matt Murdock that at least initially has a slightly different attitude toward the people that he loves, and toward himself, and toward God.” Cox appears to be aware of the same issues I would have with a season 4. He feels that the character’s arc has been completed. It’s not out of the question that the writers can come up with a great story for future seasons, but it will be difficult.
