Birds of Prey casts Victor Zsasz as screenwriter comments on the extended title

December 11, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) has just fleshed out its cast, most notably filling the villainous role of Victor Zsasz.

The Margot Robbie led Birds of Prey has welcomed a few more cast members to its line up, including the casting of Chris Messina (Sharp Objects) as bad guy Victor Zsasz – a serial killer who carves a tally mark into his skin for every victim.

Deadline notes that Messina “joins Margot Robbie who is reprising her role as Harley Quinn, and as exclusively reported by Deadline, Mary Elizabeth Winstead is playing Huntress while Jurnee Smollett-Bell will play Black Canary.” Ewan McGregor is also starring as the main villain, Black Mask.

Today’s reveal from WB also adds that the following names will also join the cast: Steven Williams (The Chi), Dana Lee (Dr. Ken), Francois Chau (The Expanse, The Tick), and Matthew Willig (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs).

The full title for the film has been announced to be Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), and while being quite the mouthful, writer for the film, Christina Hodson, has revealed its origin to Collider:

“I don’t know if I’m officially allowed to say, but there’s no reason why not. It was an unofficial aka [also known as], when I wrote the script. I added it about a year or so ago, almost exactly as it is, just as an aka. I didn’t think we’d ever use it. We’d always used a working title, so I just had it as a cheeky little thing, on the front cover. And then, when we were talking about a title and brainstorming, we all kept drifting back to that one.”

Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) is directing Birds of Prey from a script by Christina Hodson (Bumblebee) with Margot Robbie reprising her Suicide Squad role as Harley Quinn alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Fargo) as The Huntress, Jurnee Smolett-Bell (Underground) as Black Canary, Rosie Perez (Fearless) as Renee Montoya, Elle Jay Basco (Grey’s Anatomy) as Cassandra Cain, Ewan McGregor (Christopher Robin) as Black Mask and Chris Messina (Sharp Objects) as Victor Zsasz. It is set for release on February 7th 2020.
