Jason Momoa didn’t recognise Dolph Lundgren when they met on Aquaman set

December 13, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Aquaman star Jason Momoa apparently didn’t recognise Dolph Lundgren when the two first met on the film’s set.

With all the costumes, makeup, and whigs involved with a film as fantastical as Aquaman, it’s perhaps not that surprising that some actors didn’t recognise one another when they bumped into each other on set.

Well, this is just what happened to Dolph Lundgren while filming Aquaman as when he crossed paths with star Jason Momoa on set, his identity as an action movie icon went unnoticed. Speaking to Variety at the film’s premiere, the actor said:

“Well, the funny thing is when I first met him, I was dressed as Nereus. I looked different; I had a red beard and stuff. He walked right past me, I said, ‘hi Jason,’ and he goes, ‘hey, nice to meet you,’ then he came running back to my trailer like, ‘sorry, man, I didn’t recognize you!’ The first time I saw him was, I think, the final battle of the movie, when he’s become Aquaman and he has the whole armor on. I said, ‘wow. This guy really looks the part.’”

Of course, Dolph Lundgren is a hard man to miss when he is out of costume but it just goes to show what a skilful job Aquaman‘s crew did in turning Lundgren into his character Nereus.

From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman”, starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime — one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be … a king.”

Aquaman is directed by James Wan (The Conjuring) and stars Jason Momoa as the titular hero, reprising his role from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, along with Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, Willem Dafoe as Dr. Vulko, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry, Ludi Lin as Murk, Michael Beach as Jesse Kane, Djimon Hounsou as the Fisherman King, Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin, Otis Dhanji as a young Arthur Curry, Julie Andrews as Karathen and Graham McTavish in an as-yet-unrevealed role.
