Denis Villeneuve’s Dune gets a 2020 release date

February 16, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Having secured virtually every hot acting talent in Hollywood over the past few weeks, Warner Bros. has now announced that Legendary Pictures and director Denis Villeneuve’s (Blade Runner 2049) Frank Herbert adaptation Dune will open on November 20th 2020.

Dune will see Timothee Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name) starring as Paul Atreides, a member of a noble family in control of Arrakis, a desert planet which is the galaxy’s only source of a rare and highly valuable spice drug. Betrayed by a galactic emperor, Paul then leads a rebellion to restore his family’s control over the planet.

Featuring in the cast alongside Chalamet are Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible – Fallout), Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Dave Bautista (Avengers: Infinity War), Stellan Skarsgard (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again), Charlotte Rampling (Red Sparrow), Zendaya (Spider-Man: Homecoming), Javier Bardem (Loving Pablo), Jason Momoa (Aquaman) and Josh Brolin (Avengers: Endgame).

Meanwhile, speaking to Deadline, Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Roth (Forrest Gump, The Insider, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) has been talking about his early work on the script for Dune, stating:

“Dune was a real challenge; Denis Villeneuve brought me on. I had done some little bits of stuff for him for Arrival, and we really love each other personally. I turned in a really long draft, which I think was pretty cumbersome to make within the budget.

“I think the ideas were great, and I think they used most of them, but that needed a good look. I think Denis has…brought in another writer to trim it out, and get back to the book in some respects, so I think it’s exciting. The approach to it’s pretty wonderful, and it could be a beautiful movie.”
