If you kept up to date with all things X-Men during the development and production of X-Men: Dark Phoenix, you may recall a rumour from back in 2017 which suggested that Fox was planning on introducing the Skrulls to the franchise with a scene that would have seen the United Nations coming under attack by the shape-shifting alien race.
Well, it turns out that info was indeed accurate – pre-reshoots, at least – as Cyclops actor Tye Sheridan has confirmed to CinemaBlend that the sequence in question was part of the film’s original ending:
“Originally, it was scripted that Charles and Scott go to the U.N. because — man, I’m totally going to mess this up — they go to the U.N. because they’re going to try to tell the President that, ‘Hey, we’re under attack by aliens and, they’ve now captured Jean Grey.’ Or, you know, whatever it is that we’re going to tell him. And then Jean comes down in the front of the U.N., and causes… there is this huge battle between the guards at the U.N. and Jean Grey, and all the guards turn out to be Skrulls. And then Jean and Scott are — Scott is fighting Skrulls in the fountain. He gets thrown into the fountain in front of the U.N. And then Jean comes down and basically fights all of the Skrulls off, and then blasts back off into space. [She] basically says goodbye to Scott and Charles. And then it’s all over, I guess.”
While Fox ultimately opted against introducing the Skrulls, the alien race did make an appearance on the big screen earlier this year thanks to Marvel Studios and Captain Marvel. X-Men: Dark Phoenix sees Simon Kinberg directing a cast that includes franchise veterans Michael Fassbender (Magneto), James McAvoy (Professor X), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler) and Evan Peters (Quicksilver) alongside new additions Kota Eberhardt (The Persian Connection) as Selene, Andrew Stehlin (Hacksaw Ridge) as Red Lotus, and Jessica Chastain (Molly’s Game) and Lamar Johnson (Kings).
