Star Wars: Ahmed Best hasn’t heard anything about a Jar Jar Binks appearance in Obi-Wan Kenobi series

April 13, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Back in January it was rumoured that Jar Jar Binks would be making his return to the galaxy far, far away with a role in Lucasfilm’s live-action Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars series. However, if that is indeed the case, it seems it’s news to Prequel Trilogy star Ahmed Best, who portrayed the bumbling Gungan in Episodes I-III.

“Not as far as I know, no,” said Best in a recent interview with Jamie Stangroom. “I haven’t been asked. I just don’t know. To be completely honest I think Jar Jar is something Lucasfilm are trying to move away from, I’m not going to hold my breath for a Jar Jar cameo in Obi-Wan but you know, who knows.”

Although Best believes that Lucasfilm is looking to steer away from Jar Jar, the character has featured in the new Disney canon, popping up for a cameo in Chuck Wendig’s 2017 novel Star Wars Aftermath: Empire’s End which confirms that the Gungan survives through to the fall of the Galactic Empire.

Given the huge levels of secrecy surrounding all things Star Wars, Best would of course be very unlikely to confirm his involvement in the series either way; however, it’s worth noting that since the original Jar Jar rumour broke back in January, Lucasfilm has decided to completely overhaul the Obi-Wan series, bringing in Joby Harold (King Arthur: Legend of the Sword) to retool the project, and so one would assume that things are very much up in the air at this point.
