Jared Leto was “mistreated” and his Joker performance “ripped out of” Suicide Squad says director David Ayer

June 4, 2020 by Samuel Brace

David Ayer, the director of Suicide Squad, says that Jared Leto was “mistreated” and his Joker performance was “ripped out of the movie.”

Since HBO Max announced that Zack Snyder’s Justice League will be released, a similar fan movement for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad has emerged. His film was changed dramatically from his initial vision, especially regarding how much Jared Leto’s Joker was involved in the movie.

Ayer has given his support for the campaign and it turns out Jared Leto has seen some of the support fans are giving his turn as the Joker. A fan account for the campaign wrote on Twitter: “Still can’t believe that just a few hours ago JARED LETO liked one of our tweets from our campaign. We’re glad our campaign brought many smiles to people’s faces. #ReleaseTheAyerCut.”

Ayer then responded by describing the extent to which Leto’s Joker was removed from the film: “Jared was pretty mistreated during this. No one has seen his performance. It was ripped out of the movie.”

Whether or not more footage and context for Leto’s Joker would improve the film and people’s perception of the character will remain to be seen. But if WB is giving Snyder a chance to have his true vision released for Justice League, perhaps they should give the same courtesy to Ayer. What are your thoughts?
