Avengers: Endgame directors say a Secret Wars movie would be bigger than The Infinity Saga

After weaving so many threads and bringing together dozens of characters from across the various branches of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, one has to wonder how Marvel Studios could possibly hope to raise the stakes and the scale for its new big MCU event.


However, if you’re directors Anthony and Joe Russo, you already know: an adaptation of the seminal Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars comic book event which ran across twelve issues between 1984 and 1985 and saw a host of Marvel’s biggest heroes and villains transported to Battleworld for a Battle Royale of epic proportions.

The Russos have already stated on multiple occasions that a Secret Wars movie could tempt them back to the MCU, and now the filmmaking siblings have explained to BroBible why they find the story so appealing.

“You know, I read that when I was 10 or 11, and it was the scale of getting all of the heroes together,” said Joe. “It was one of the first major books to do that — that was really event-storytelling to me at its finest. And what happens when you put all of those personalities together. I also like the idea of villains having to team up with heroes.”

“Ant and I like complicated relationships between heroes and villains, we like villains who believe they’re heroes in their own stories, so it’s all sort of built into this notion of Secret Wars,” Joe continued. “To execute something on the scale of Infinity War was directly related to the dream of Secret Wars, which is even larger in scale.”

“It would be the biggest movie you could possibly imagine, so that’s what really excites us about the story — the ambition of it is even bigger than the ambition of the Infinity Saga,” added Anthony.

With Phase Four yet to get underway, we still have no idea where Marvel plans to take the MCU for its next big “saga”. However, a Secret Wars-style event would certainly prove an enormous spectacle and one would have to assume that Marvel would welcome the Russos back with open arms given the success they’ve enjoyed on with Captain America and Avengers movies.
