Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon begins casting

July 21, 2020 by Ricky Church

Entertainment Weekly has brought word HBO has begun the casting process for its Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon.

The series is set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones and will depict the rise and fall of the Targaryen dynasty in Westeros. Though there are no casting breakdowns at the moment, HBO is said to be looking for two actresses to fill their female lead roles, likely to be Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower.

EW also notes the show will eventually cover the Dance of the Dragons, a civil war within the Targaryen family that is often mentioned in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels and was explained more in-depth in his Targaryen centric Fire & Blood.

Rhaenyra Targaryen was daughter to King Viserys I and believed she would rule Westeros, but her claim to the throne was challenged by her half-brother Aegon II, igniting a civil war within the family. Alicent Hightower was Viserys’ second-wife and Rhaenyra’s step-mother and backed Aegon II’s claim.

Ryan Condol (Colony) will showrun House of the Dragon and is joined by Game of Thrones veteran Miguel Sapochnik, who directed several episodes of the series such as season six’s ‘The Battle of the Bastards’. He will direct the pilot and additional episode in the 10-episode season.
