Is Matt Damon set to return to the MCU in Thor: Love and Thunder?

January 18, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

Ordinarily this kind of news might be passed off as pure coincidence, but with the cast and crew of Thor: Love and Thunder currently starting their stringent Antipodean isolation ahead of filming in Australia, news.com.au is reporting that Matt Damon is set to beef up his cameo from Thor: Ragnarok.

Having flown his family out to their own private quarantine this week, the report claims that Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, and Tessa Thompson are currently going through their period of quarantine at a government hotel, and that Natalie Portman, who will be wielding Mjolnir as she reprises the role of Jane Foster, has been in Australia for a few months already.

With Thor: Love and Thunder set to film in Sydney at an as yet unspecified date, bringing back Damon’s uncredited character from Ragnarok feels like a very Taika Waititi thing to do. The Bourne actor appeared in an Asgardian am-dram production of Thor: The Dark World, dressed as Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, and was one of the many belly-laughs scattered throughout what was arguably Marvel’s funniest film to date.

It could just be that Damon is in Australia for a break, having spent months of the lockdown in Ireland after shooting Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel, or it’s for another project, with many productions heading to the country due to their relative success in dealing with the pandemic.

Thor: Love and Thunder is being directed by Thor: Ragnarok helmer Taika Waititi, who also reprises his on-screen role as Korg alongside Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Natalie Portman (Jane Foster), Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie), Jaimie Alexander (Lady Sif), Chris Pratt (Star-Lord) and Christian Bale (Ford v Ferrari) as Gorr the God Butcher. The film is set for a May 6th, 2022 release.
