Marvel’s Secret Invasion won’t be an all-encompassing MCU event like Avengers: Endgame

January 17, 2021 by Gary Collinson

Ever since the Skrulls made their debut in Captain Marvel, fans have been speculating if and when Marvel Comics’ Secret Invasion storyline will play out in the MCU, and we got that answer during Disney’s Investor Day last month when Kevin Feige revealed that Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and Ben Mendelsohn (Talos) are set to star in a Secret Invasion TV series on Disney+.

Given how all-encompassing the Secret Invasion angle of the comic books was – featuring almost all of the major players in the Marvel universe – many fans had speculated that the storyline could succeed ‘The Infinity Saga’ as the next major arc of the MCU throughout Phase Four (and beyond). However, Marvel instead looks to be going in a different direction, with Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige confirming that the series won’t be an Avengers: Endgame-sized event, but rather a showcase for its two stars.

“There were more characters in the Secret Invasion comic series than there were in Endgame so, no, it’s not that, but it very much is a showcase for Sam Jackson and Ben Mendelson and tapping into the paranoia elements of the Secret Invasion comic series that was great with the twists and turns that it took,” said Feige via Comic Book. “So, that’s certainly our focus more than, ‘Can we cram in more characters than Endgame? like publishing?'”

“We’re interested in the political paranoia aspect of Secret Invasion and really showcasing the stars with Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn, two amazing actors that you want to have in any series, and we’re very lucky to have them for that,” Feige added (via Collider). “That’s the sort of primary focus of that and, of course, it will tie into other things and the Skrulls in ways you haven’t seen before, but yes, anything could be anything. Wise words… But we wanted to do that as a series because it would allow us to do something different than we’ve done before.”

While Secret Invasion won’t have an Endgame-sized cast, one would have to imagine there’ll still be a few familiar faces alongside Jackson and Mendelsohn in the series, and at least one or two characters unmasked as Skrull sleeper agents.
