HBO updates on what’s going on with True Detective Season 4

February 11, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

While the internet explodes with the casting news for HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us, the television network have been discussing the status of one of the shows upon which their stellar reputation has been built; Nic Pizolatto’s True Detective, which according to a Deadline interview with Chief Content Creator, Casey Bloys, could be moving forward without its creator.

After the dark crime anthology series returned to form (although there are some of us who liked the sophomore run) with the Mahershala Ali headlined season 3, everything went quiet. Even the social media casting memes appeared to disappear from timelines. However, it now seems that despite Nic Pizzolatto claiming that he had a “really, really wild” idea for season 4, the next journey into the darker recesses of the human mind might be done without him.

During the interview Bloys didn’t mention any direct involvement from Pizzolatto, stating that “It’s safe to say we’re working with a couple of writers to find the right tone and take. It’s definitely an area that could be very interesting and I think it would be interesting with a new voice. Quality is what’s going to guide us so if we end up with scripts that we don’t feel are representative or are not at a high enough quality, we’re not going to do something just to do it.”

The report does highlight speculation that Argentinian writer-director Lucía Puenzo has been linked with the show, as has Malcolm & Marie and Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, so it doesn’t take a Rust Cohle level investigation to come to the conclusion that True Detective season 4 looks likely to be under new stewardship.

Are you looking forward to another season of True Detective, or has the show never lived up to that groundbreaking first run? Let us know what you think of the news by heading over to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…..
