Ryan Gosling to play Ken opposite Margot Robbie in Warner Bros.’ Barbie movie

October 23, 2021 by EJ Moreno

Is this one of the best castings in recent memory? If director Greta Gerwig is adding her signature touch to Barbie, then this could be a stroke of casting genius.

Ryan Gosling will play Ken, the boyfriend/husband of Barbie, as per Deadline. Starring as the titular doll is Margot Robbie; this will be the first time Gosling and Robbie have worked together.

Gosling is quite the busy actor and initially turned down the role of Ken in Gerwig’s Barbie, but with the pandemic pushing pre-production and Warner Bros insisting Gosling was the man for the part, he eventually agreed to play dolls with them.

Now that Gosling has joined Robbie in the film, Barbie will likely begin to shoot at the start of 2022. As mentioned, Lady Bird director Greta Gerwig will helm the piece with a script co-written by Noah Baumbach. Plot details aren’t known at the time of writing but expect this to be a different take on the Mattel character.

Robbie is producing the film under her LuckyChap Entertainment label, joined by LuckyChap’s Tom Ackerley, Mattel’s Robbie Brenner, and David Heyman. LuckyChap’s Josey McNamara and Mattel’s Ynon Kreiz are executive producers.

Ryan Gosling recently wrapped production on The Gray Man, an upcoming Netflix action film from The Russo Brothers, where he’ll star opposite Chris Evans and his Blade Runner 2049 co-star Ana de Armas.
