Ava DuVernay’s New Gods movie seemingly axed due to Zack Snyder’s Justice League

November 3, 2021 by Amie Cranswick

Back in 2018 it was announced that Oscar-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay was set to bring Jack Kirby’s Fourth World to life with a feature film adaptation of DC Comics’ New Gods, a superhero epic pitting the noble and heroic inhabitants of New Genesis against the fearsome Darkseid and the evil forces of Apokolips.

Unfortunately it was revealed back in April of this year that Warner Bros. and DC Films had decided to shelve New Gods (along with the Aquaman spinoff The Trench, which James Wan has since revealed was actually a Black Manta movie), and now in an interview on Sirius XM, DuVernay has suggested that the plug was pulled due to Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

“I loved New Gods, which is the project that got axed,” said DuVernay. “The studio decided that they did not want to pursue a certain part of that comic world based on some things that were going on with another film in that world. So, before I even was able to kind of complete my script with Tom King, they axed it.”

As we saw in The Snyder Cut, Justice League villain Steppenwolf was joined by Darkseid and other villains such as DeSaad and Granny Goodness in the four-hour epic, and presumably these would have been different incarnations of the characters to the ones that DuVernay planned to use. However, with Warner Bros. firmly ruling out a continuation of the SnyderVerse, perhaps the studio will revisit New Gods at some point further down the line…

Are you disappointed that WB pulled the plug on New Gods? Let us know on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…

In ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher), and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad, and Darkseid, and their dreadful intentions.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is directed by Zack Snyder and features Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, Robin Wright as General Antiope, J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, Amber Heard as Mera, Joe Morton as Silas Stone, Willem Dafoe as Vulko, Ciaran Hinds as Steppenwolf, Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke, Harry Lennix as Martian Manhunter, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Zheng Kai as Ryan Choi, Peter Guinness as DeSaad, Ray Porter as Darkseid, and Jared Leto as The Joker.
