Nicolas Cage and Jerry Bruckheimer are working on National Treasure 3

May 29, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Any hope that we’d ever get to see a third installment of the National Treasure franchise appeared as lost as one of relics sought out by Nicolas Cage’s wonderfully named intrepid explorer Benjamin Franklin Gates. However, in news akin to finding a map to the mythical treasure, super producer Jerry Bruckheimer has revealed that the two are working on a script for National Treasure 3.

Until now it was feared that Cage’s questionable choices and reluctance to return to blockbuster movies would scupper a second sequel for the $800M grossing series, and that we’d only be able to return to this world of double-crossing and relic hunting in the form of the in-production Disney+ spin-off series.

That was until Bruckheimer took part in a Reddit Ask Me Anything session in which he was approached about teaming up with Nicolas Cage again, to which he replied “Absolutely. I love Nicolas, he’s a brilliant actor and we are currently working on a script for National Treasure“.

Cage has been experiencing something of a career renaissance lately, with critically acclaimed roles in Pig (Flickering Myth’s second-favourite movie of 2021) and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent reminding audiences just how good the Academy Award winning actor can be, so there’s little surprise that in this age of legacy sequels they’d return to a successful franchise which has laid dormant for 15 years.
