First look at Brendan Fraser in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale

July 27, 2022 by Amie Cranswick

Ahead of its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, A24 has released a first-look image from director Darren Aronofsky’s upcoming film The Whale starring Brendan Fraser. Take a look here…

An adaptation of Samuel D. Hunter’s 2012 play of the same name, the film sees Fraser starring as a 600lb man suffering from a compulsive eating disorder who attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter, played by Stranger Things’ Sadie Sink, for last one chance at redemption.

“It’s gonna be like something you haven’t seen before,” Fraser told Unilad about his transformation into the character. “The wardrobe and costume was extensive, seamless, cumbersome. This is certainly far removed from anything I’ve ever done but not to be coy… I do know it’s going to make a lasting impression.”

The Whale marks Aronofsky’s first film since 2017’s mother! and sees Fraser and Sink joined in the cast by Hong Chau (Watchmen), Samantha Morton (The Walking Dead), and Ty Simpkins (Avengers: Endgame).

The film will mark Fraser’s first lead role in a major theatrical release since 2010’s Furry Vengeance. The actor has enjoyed a career resurgence of late however; he is coming off a supporting turn in last year’s No Sudden Move from director Steven Soderbergh, and also has HBO Max’s DC movie Batgirl and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon on the horizon.

The 2022 Venice Film Festival runs between Wednesday, August 31st and Saturday, September 10th.
