Emma Mackey saying goodbye to Maeve with Sex Education season 4

February 21, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Newly crowned BAFTA Rising Star winner Emma Mackey has announced that she will be leaving Netflix’s Sex Education following season 4.

Coming off the back of a year in which she was cast in Greta Gerwig’s eagerly-anticipated Barbie movie, and headlined one of 2022’s best with the superb Brontë biopic Emily, Mackey told The Radio Times that she had “said goodbye to Maeve”, her popular character from the ground-breaking Netflix series.

After winning her BAFTA Rising Star Award on Sunday, the gathered press asked about whether she’d be back for season 5 of Sex Education, to which she replied “Season 5? I’ve just finished the fourth one last week!”

She quickly added that she would be joining fellow departee and Barbie star Ncuti Gatwa by saying “No I don’t think I’ll be in season 5. I’ve said goodbye to Maeve.”

It wasn’t all sad news for the cast of Sex Education though, because it was also revealed that Queen & Slim‘s Jodie Turner-Smith was joining the show for Season 5.
