Harley Quinn showrunner teases Kite Man spinoff as “Cheers but for B-list supervillains”

February 11, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Kite Man has gone from one of the most obscure to a fan favorite because of his recent role in Harley Quinn.

The character has grown so much that we are gearing up for an upcoming spinoff series based on the B-list supervillain. Harley Quinn showrunners Patrick Schumacker and Justin Halpern recently spoke to Variety about the forthcoming Harley Quinn special but also touched on the spinoff series.

Halpern says, “It’s run by Dean Lorey, who we did the first three seasons with, and he partners with Katie Rich, an amazing comedy writer. The Kite Man series is gonna hit some of the same vibes that the special does. It gets out there. It goes for it. They’ve done such a good job of making Kite Man and Golden Gliders lovable doofuses. Pat and I pitched ‘Harley’ as ‘It’s ‘Mary Tyler Moore’ with a psycho killer at the front.”

Halpern adds, “But we’ve always talked about the The Kite Man show as Cheers. Cheers, but for B-list supervillains.”

Kite Man is based on the character we met in Harley Quinn, the hit animated series on HBO Max. You can see these wild characters in the recent Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special.

As Harley goes to obsessive lengths to ensure that her first Valentine’s Day with Ivy is the best ever, Bane’s efforts to impress an unexpected date go horribly awry. Meanwhile, after an unfortunate online dating encounter, Clayface engages in some self-love.

Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special features the voice talents of Kaley Cuoco, Lake Bell, Alan Tudyk, Matt Oberg, James Wolk , Natalie Morales, Chris Diamantopoulos, James Adomian, Jim Rash, Vanessa Marshall, Janet Varney, Rachel Dratch, Leila Birch, Tyler James Williams, Josh Helman, Casey Wilson, and Michael Ironside.

Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’sDay Special is now on HBO Max.
