Phoebe Waller-Bridge talks about her upcoming Tomb Raider series

June 28, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is tackling the iconic video game Tomb Raider, and now she’s opening up about the process while promoting Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, the playwright, writer, producer, and actress dove into how she’s handling Lara Croft and Tomb Raider. Waller-Bridge looks back at her history with the character, declaring herself a true fan.

“My parents were very smart because they didn’t actually limit me. They could sense that I was going to just game myself into the ground, and I did. I packed the PlayStation away, and I was like, ‘I’ve got to not do that because I’ve got to write and read and do other stuff,” says the actress.

She adds that she’ll take this moment to bring in something different, noting: “I feel like when you’re working in the industry, you’ve got to ride the waves and lean in. There’s room to do something really quite dangerous. And if I can do something dangerous and exciting with Tomb Raider, I already have an audience of people who love Lara and hopefully will continue to. And that is a very unusual position to be in. It’s the old Trojan horse.”

The look of Lara Croft has always been a talking point, and the actress knows that for sure. “She’s a tomb raider, so she’s incredibly fit. She has to squeeze through tiny rock crevices all the time. It is a different experience squeezing through a small rock crevice when you have larger boobs than if you have smaller boobs.”

And for fans nervous about too much “woke” in their tomb raiding, she attempts to ease the nerves, “There’s nothing worse than feeling like you’re being lectured when you were promised a party. There are lots of shows out there that don’t hide the lesson that they’re trying to teach us. And they get boring quite quickly.”

You can see Phoebe Waller-Bridge stretching her adventure muscles in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which is out in cinemas now.

Directed by James Mangold, the film is produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, and Simon Emanuel, with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas serving as executive producers. John Williams, who has scored each Indy adventure since the original “Raiders of the Lost Ark” in 1981, is once again composing the score.

Starring along with Harrison Ford are Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Fleabag”), Antonio Banderas (“Pain and Glory”), John Rhys-Davies (“Raiders of the Lost Ark”), Shaunette Renee Wilson (“Black Panther”), Thomas Kretschmann (“Das Boot”), Toby Jones (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”), Boyd Holbrook (“Logan”), Oliver Richters (“Black Widow”), Ethann Isidore (“Mortel”) and Mads Mikkelsen (“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore”).

Indiana Jones final adventure begins when Dial of Destiny lands in cinemas on June 30th, 2023.
