The Week in Spandex – Ant-Man, The Punisher, Spider-Man, X-Men: Apocalypse, Gambit, Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad, Batman Beyond, Hit Girl and more

June 20, 2015 by Gary Collinson

In this edition of The Week in Spandex, we look at Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, The Punisher, Daredevil, Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., Spider-Man, Gambit, X-Men: Apocalypse, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Fantastic Four, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, Aquaman, Batman Beyond, The Flash, Arrow, Hit Girl, Kick-Ass 3, The Crow and more…

It’s been a pretty quiet week in the world of superherodom, although Marvel Studios has been quietly upping the promotional for Ant-Man ahead of its release next month, debuting a selection of new posters and TV spots [see here, here and here], along with a batch of images from the film featuring Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), T.I. (Dave), Michael Pena (Luis), David Dastmalchian (Kurt) and Bobby Cannavale (Paxton). Meanwhile, the Avengers themed posters featuring Iron Man, Thor and Captain America inspired a host of parodies centred on Black Widow, with the miniature superhero standing small on Natasha’s boobs and bum [check them out here]…

…We’ll get our first look at Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang when Ant-Man opens on July 17th, before Rudd teams up with pretty much everyone else on the Marvel roster next May in Captain America: Civil War, and the actor has been talking about shooting the Phase Three-launching ensemble during a promotional interview this week: “It’s been an interesting thing [playing Ant-Man] because I also just went and worked a little bit on Captain America 3. To be in that Marvel world, but kind of be somewhat in a bubble [on the solo movie] and now to kind of have these experiences where I’m standing opposite Captain America, It’s been a surreal ride so far. It’s really only just starting…”

…Following on from the recent news that Frank Castle is set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Jon Bernthal has briefly shared his excitement over his upcoming role as The Punisher, while Daredevil star Rosario Dawson also spoke about the new addition to the series and his impact on the show: “That’s going to raise the stakes so much more, because Matt Murdock almost behaves like the Punisher in the first season. [Matt] crosses the line quite often, so it’s going to be really interesting to see how they differentiate them and where that goes.” Dawson went on to discuss her character Claire Temple / Night Nurse, and possible crossovers with future Netflix shows like Jessica Jones and Luke Cage; you can read all of her comments here…

…We’ve posted a few MCU-related op-eds on Flickering Myth this week; be sure to check out Anghus Houvouras’ ‘Why The Punisher Works Better As a Supporting Character‘, Oliver Davis’ ‘Top 5 Marvel Movie Fan Theories, Ranked’ and Marc N. Kleinhenz’s ‘Civil War or The Winter Soldier? How Marvel Has Made Character King and Plot Irrelevant‘…

…The Avengers are set to guest star in Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. this Sunday on Disney XD, and you can take a look at a clip from the episode ‘Planet Monster: Part One’ here…

…When it was first announced that Spider-Man would be rebooted for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there was a lot of speculation that we might see a non-white incarnation of the wall-crawler; however, it seems that was never on the cards – at least not with Peter Parker under the mask – as a leaked licensing agreement between Marvel and Sony has revealed that Peter can’t be anything but “caucasian and heterosexual”. You can check out the full Spider-Mandate here…

…Having reportedly been turned down by a number of candidates, 20th Century Fox has finally found a director for next year’s (second) X-Men spinoff Gambit, with Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) set to helm the Channing Tatum-led solo movie. Meanwhile, Channing Tatum offered up a few words about Wyatt’s appointment and his hopes for the movie, as well as ruling out a cameo in X-Men: Apocalypse, stating that he “definitely will not” appear in the Bryan Singer-helmed ensemble…

…A few months ago Patrick Stewart suggested that Ian McKellen would be back as Magneto in X-Men: Apocalypse, but it seems the elder Professor X was mistaken as McKellen has revealed this week that he won’t be returning for a sixth X-Men outing (well, not yet, anyway). Meanwhile, Bryan Singer has dropped another behind-the-scenes image from the film, which sees him joined by Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner (Jean Grey)…

…Before we move on from the X-Men franchise, the first promo has landed online for The Rogue Cut of X-Men: Days of Future Past, which offers up the tiniest glimpse of Anna Paquin’s Rogue [watch the promo here]. The Rogue Cut is set to land on Blu-ray on on July 14th, so not long to wait now…

…Ahead of its expected panel at Comic-Con, a new featurette has arrived online for Fantastic Four, although it doesn’t offer up anything in the way of footage from the upcoming reboot, but rather behind-the-scenes footage of cast members Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell posing for a photoshoot…

…Click below to continue on for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, Aquaman, Batman Beyond, The Flash, Arrow, Hit Girl, Kick-Ass 3, The Crow and more…
