Mel Gibson to direct war thriller Destroyer, wanted for role in The Six Billion Dollar Man

May 6, 2018 by Gary Collinson

According to THR, Mel Gibson is readying his next directorial effort, the World War II naval thriller Destroyer, while he is also wanted for a role alongside Mark Wahlberg in the long-gestating The Six Billion Dollar Man movie.

Destroyer is based upon John Wukovits’s book Hell From the Heavens: The Epic Story of the USS Laffey and World War II’s Greatest Kamikaze Attack and has been scripted by Gibson’s longtime girlfriend Rosalind Ross (Matador).

Similar to Gibson’s last movie Hacksaw Ridge, Destroyer also deals with the Battle of Okinawa, albeit from the perspective of the crew of the USS Laffey, which faced 22 kamikaze attacks on April 16th 1945.

Gibson intends on beginning production on Destroyer this year, but may have to wait until winter if he does accept a role in The Six Billion Dollar Man, which will start shooting in late summer. Wahlberg is reportedly keen to reunite with Gibson after the two worked together on the comedy Daddy’s Home 2.

Mark Wahlberg plays Dusty and Mel Gibson plays Kurt in Daddy’s Home 2 from Paramount Pictures.
