Amazon in talks to rescue The Expanse

May 22, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Good news for fans of The Expanse, as THR is reporting that Amazon Studios is in talks to revive the sci-fi series for a fourth season after it was cancelled by Syfy earlier this month.

According to the outlet, Amazon – which has domestic streaming rights to the first three seasons – is in final talks with producers Alcon Television Group to order a fourth season of the show, which is said to be one of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’ favourite properties, and a deal is expected to be closed soon.

Alcon’s CEO’s Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson had previously stated that they intended to find another outlet for the series, stating after the cancellation that: ““We are very disappointed the show will not be returning to Syfy. We respect Syfy’s decision to end this partnership but given the commercial and critical success of the show, we fully plan to pursue other opportunities for this terrific and original IP.”

Based on the series of novels by James S. A. Corey and developed by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, The Expanse takes place in a future where humanity has colonized the solar system, leading to three factions – The Earthers, The Martians, and the Belters – who find themselves on the brink of war.

Hundreds of years in the future, humans have colonized the solar system. The U.N. controls Earth. Mars is an independent military power. The planets rely on the resources of the Asteroid Belt, where air and water are more precious than gold. For decades, tensions have been rising between these three places. Earth, Mars and the Belt are now on the brink of war. And all it will take is a single spark.
