Action puzzler The General Retreats arrives on Steam and Itch.io

June 15, 2018 by Andrew Newton

Thom Robertson of Incadescent Workshop has announced the release of this puzzle action game, The General Retreats on Steam and Itch.io.  This unique puzzler will see players racing their generals to safety away from incoming enemy fire.

The aim of The General Retreats is a very simple one, race the vehicle across the map to reach the goal before you get blasted by enemy fire.  However, timing is critical and every turn made puts the general at more risk.  Players will need to steer their vehicle through several tutorials and ten maps avoiding deadly hazards such as bombs, artillery, attack helicopters and enemy tanks.  If you master a map with one vehicle there are 4 other unique vehicles to challenge your driving skills.

“I knew I wanted to make a game out of a grid hanging in space. Many classic puzzle games like Intelligent Qube, Klax, and Catherine have a playfield inside a skybox. So I started there, and then got a jeep model to move around on the maze-like terrain I’d created. The trees and goal were easy. Then the enemies and their behaviors were all fun to add in. I had the most fun with the enemy fighters, because they move in a large wheel, like a Ferris wheel. The enemy tanks were more troublesome. I spent a lot of time making sure they traveled the path that I wanted them to.” – Thom Robertson

Listen up, soldier! This war is no bed of cherries! One minute you’re sipping scotch at the Blackjack table, the next minute enemy troops are raiding the casino! Now it’s up to you to get my brass out of here! They issued maps of the escape route, but I didn’t get one because I was at a . . . staff meeting. It’s up to you to drive us across the battlefield to safety. Good luck, soldier!

The General Retreats is a puzzle game. Steer your vehicle through a dangerous battlefield, avoiding bombs, artillery, and enemy tanks. Every attempt plays out exactly the same way, so you can learn the fastest safe path to the goal.

The General Retreats is available now on Steam and Itch.io.
