The Flash co-director hints at 2020 release date

June 25, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Although it was originally slated to arrive this year, Warner Bros. and DC Films’ solo movie The Flash has – like many DCEU projects – had a troubled road through development since it was first announced back in 2014.

It has passed through the hands of two directors in Seth Grahame-Smith and Rick Famuyiwa, both of whom left the project due to creative differences, and was subsequently announced as having been reworked into an adaptation of the Flashpoint comic book storyline (which, if you’re unfamiliar with the source material, places a non-powered Barry Allen into a vastly different alternate DC universe).

The latest rumours now suggest that Warner and DC have opted to ditch the Flashpoint angle in favour of a more traditional solo movie, and while that is unconfirmed, we do know that the project appears to be picking up speed under recently appointed directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (writers of Spider-Man: Homecoming).

Responding to a fan question on Twitter about when we can expect to see his next film – i.e. The Flash – co-director John Francis Daley posted the following response:

If all goes well, sometime in 2020.

— John Francis Daley (@JohnFDaley) June 23, 2018

Warner Bros. does have two DC movies dated for 2020, one of which will presumably be filled by Birds of Prey, which is expected to begin filming later this year or early next. As for the other, it seems likely that the Scarlet Speedster’s solo movie could occupy the other spot given how far along the development process it appears to be.

However, as we’ve seen time and again with the DC Extended Universe, it’s certainly no guarantee that “all goes well”, and plans can and do change overnight.
