Comic Book Review – Uncle Scrooge #4

July 22, 2015 by Jessie Robertson

Jessie Robertson reviews Uncle Scrooge #4…

The Grand Canyon Conquest, Part 1 of 2: When an old Klondike debt spirals out of control, Scrooge fears his fortune will be colonized by con men!

It may be just that I’m a kid of the 80’s and 90’s but there’s not many comics I can read and have as much fun with than a Disney Duck book. It’s nice to have the gang back in the same form as yesteryear, and everything from the panel layout, art style and humor is classic Scrooge.

SEE ALSO: Preview of Uncle Scrooge #4

This adventure is the beginning of at least a two-parter; Scrooge’s old business partner, Dimwitty, and he made an agreement years back to split all their earnings 50/50; but Dimwitty (as his name precludes) was the more easy-going of the two and allowed Scrooge to profit from their success; except his nephew has shown up and wants half of it all, and is well prepared too, knowing every financial move Scrooge has made over the years. He’s in a dark depression. He recruits Donald and the boys to help him out as they travel to L.A. to investigate a hotel of Scrooge’s actually losing money. I love Donald Duck; of all the Disney characters, there’s something so fun about watching a guy blow his stack at every little turn, who thinks so much of himself but also has a sweet side to him as well. I mean, what happened to Huey, Louie and Dewey’s mom?

Donald and the boys find out the manager of the hotel is swindling money from the hotel and they chase him into of all places, Disneyland. There’s a myriad of cameos and locales shown from the classic amusement park that most Disney-philes will enjoy. There’s also 2 backup stories in a thick package of a book sure to please most any fans of this material. For new readers, it’s an acquired taste but I’m thinking the vintage look and appeal of the book is a big bonus.

Rating: 7/10
