Comic Book Review – The Raid #1

July 29, 2018 by Calum Petrie

Calum Petrie reviews The Raid #1…

How exactly do you turn an extremely heavily choreographed martial arts film into a comic book series? Well, the answer is very interestingly.

The Raid, for those who may not know, is an excellent action film set in Indonesia, in which an elite police force are trapped and have to escape a heavily fortified tower block.

The four-part comic series from Titan is focused around two police officers in prison for different reasons – one is undercover and the other is there for punishment. The story of police officers in jail is not a foreign concept in police films/TV shows, but when you take the criminal underworld of Indonesia, throw in some ultra violence and martial artists and you have The Raid.

The main character from the films, Rama, is still present in the comic and is undercover in the prison. The character’s martial arts prowess is still something to behold even if it is just on print (or e-book in my case), and draws you back to the deliciously crafted violence of the original film.

The first issue of this series flew through quickly; this could be because I found the story to be very interesting, or perhaps I just enjoyed the change of genre. All I really do know is that this is a series I am looking forward to finding out more about when the next issue drops.
