Ryan Coogler closes deal to write and direct Marvel’s Black Panther 2

October 12, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

After delivering an enormous critical and commercial success for Marvel Studios earlier this year with Black Panther, THR is reporting that Ryan Coogler has now closed his deal to return to Wakanda as writer and director on Black Panther 2.

According to the site, Marvel was keen to secure Coogler’s services as soon as the record-breaking numbers came in on Black Panther’s opening weekend, but the filmmaker wanted to take some time before opening talks.

Coogler is set to reunite with his Fruitvale Station, Creed and Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan on Wrong Answer, after which he’ll begin working on T’Challa’s next big screen adventure with Marvel looking to begin production in late 2019 or early 2020.

Based on that filming schedule, it’s likely that Black Panther 2 will arrive in theaters some time in 2021, and Marvel already has a February 12th date set that year, and given how good February was to the first movie, that may very well turn out to be the sequel’s release date.

After the events of Captain America: Civil War, King T’Challa returns home to the reclusive, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to serve as his country’s new leader. However, T’Challa soon finds that he is challenged for the throne from factions within his own country. When two foes conspire to destroy Wakanda, the hero known as Black Panther must team up with C.I.A. agent Everett K. Ross and members of the Dora Milaje, Wakandan special forces, to prevent Wakanda from being dragged into a world war.

Black Panther sees Ryan Coogler (Creed) directing Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa alongside Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Forest Whitaker as Zuri, Daniel Kaluuya as W’Kabi, Angela Bassett as Ramonda, Florence Kasumba as Ayo, Martin Freeman as Everett Ross, Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Sterling K. Brown as N’Jobu, John Kani as King T’Chaka and Nabiyah Be as Linda.
