Marvel’s Kevin Feige promises “a very different type of origin story” with Captain Marvel

October 29, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

Before she links up with the rest of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes for what we expect to be a key role in Avengers 4, Marvel is set to introduce Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers through her very own, 90s-set solo film this coming March.

And, speaking to Variety, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige promising that we can expect something “very different” when it comes to Captain Marvel and its approach to the origin story.

“It takes place in the 1990s and while it is an origin story of our hero, it is a very different type of origin story which we’re excited to unveil to audiences,” said Feige. “[It’s] come together extremely well. Brie does a tremendous job. Samuel L. Jackson is a very different version of Nick Fury, does an amazing job, the entire cast — this one is very different and very exciting.”

Marvel has managed to avoid the well-worn traditional superhero origin movie with its last two franchise launchers, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Black Panther, and from what little we’ve seen of the film so far, it certainly looks like we can be optimistic that this will prove to be the case with Captain Marvel too.

Captain Marvel follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Captain Marvel is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Mississippi Grind) and sees Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island) leading the cast as Carol Danvers alongside Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers), Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lashana Lynch (Fast Girls), Gemma Chan (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Algenis Perez Soto (Sambá), Rune Temte (Eddie The Eagle), McKenna Grace (I, Tonya), Annette Bening (American Beauty), McKenna Grace (Gifted), Ana Ayora (The Big Wedding), Vik Sahay (Chuck), Kenneth Mitchell (Star Trek: Discovery), Chuku Modo (The Good Doctor), Clark Gregg (The Avengers) and Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald).
