Deadpool 2 writers explain why PG-13 cut is happening, confirm new scenes have been shot

October 30, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers of Deadpool 2, have explained why the film is receiving a PG-13 cut.

Some fans were surprised when news broke regarding a PG-13 cut of Deadpool 2 but considering how popular the R-rated film is, it makes a lot of sense for Fox to want to bring it to a wider audience.

This is exactly the reason why the new version of the film, new scenes and all, is coming to cinemas according to writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who spoke to CinemaBlend:

“There is that segment of the population who we’ve treated to a great disservice by not letting them see Deadpool, and we’ve sort of driven a wedge between parents and their tweener kids who aren’t quite old enough to see it, and are bitter about it. And parents who were mad that Deadpool is of a certain rating, and that their kids whine all the time about it. So we’re trying to serve that demographic, in particular.”

Meanwhile, the screenwriters also confirmed to SlashFilm that the PG-13 cut will feature new scenes, as well as a Princess Bride-style framing device:

“We definitely shot new stuff, and recently too. After Deadpool 2 came out and we were all sitting around, we came to it less about the idea of let’s make a PG-13 movie and more, ‘Let’s talk a little bit about Deadpool.’ We were kicking around some ideas and then I think it was Ryan [Reynolds] who had the great framing device and we all got excited and went to the studio.

“They said, ‘Yeah, let’s do it. Fire up the cameras.’ About two months ago we were out on soundstages shooting again. Ryan was in the suit and the gang was back together, Dave Leitch and Ryan and us having a great time and laughing. It comes together great so we’re super excited about it.”

Marvel’s motormouth mercenary is back! Bigger, better and occasionally more pantless than ever before. When a super soldier arrives on a murderous mission, Deadpool is forced to think about friendship, family and what it really means to be a hero – all while kicking 50 shades of ass. Because, sometimes, to do the right thing you need to fight dirty.

Deadpool 2 sees David Leitch (John Wick) directing a cast that includes returning stars Ryan Reynolds (Wade Wilson), Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), T.J. Miller (Weasel), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), Stefan Kapicic (Colossus), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al) and Karan Soni (Dopinder) alongside new additions Zazie Beetz (Atlanta) as Domino, Josh Brolin (Avengers: Infinity War) as Cable, Terry Crews (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) as Bedlam, Lewis Tan (Iron Fist) as Shatterstar, Bill Skarsgard (It) as Zeitgeist, Rob Delaney (Catastrophe), Julian Dennison (Hunt for the Wilderpeople) as Russell, Jack Kesy (The Strain) as Black Tom Cassidy and Shioli Kutsuna (The Outsider) as Yukio.
