Penny Dreadful sequel series City of Angels announced

November 2, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Showtime has announced that it is reviving its acclaimed gothic horror series Penny Dreadful for a spinoff sequel entitled Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, which will be set in 1938 Los Angeles and feature all new characters and storylines. Here’s a look at the teaser artwork for the new show…

Penny Dreadful creator John Logan will return for what is being described as a “spiritual descendant” of the original series, which he says will have a “social consciousness and historical awareness. we will now be grappling with specific historical and real-world political, religious, social and racial issues. In 1938, Los Angeles was facing some hard questions about its future and its soul. Our characters must do the same.”

Penny Dreadful was a joint production by Showtime and Sky, and ran for three seasons between 2014 and 2016. The show featured a number of iconic characters from gothic fiction such as Dracula, Frankenstein, The Picture of Dorian Gray and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, while its cast included Eva Green, Timothy Dalton, Reeve Carney, Rory Kinnear, Billie Piper, Harry Treadaway and Josh Hartnett.

Filming on Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is set to begin in 2019.
