Dan Aykroyd says Ghostbusters 3 script is in the works

November 18, 2018 by Gary Collinson

When your first attempt at a franchise revival with an all-female reboot fails, who you gonna call?

Well, if you’re Sony, you’re going to be calling the original Ghostbusters – at least, if Dan Aykroyd is to be believed, with the co-writer and star of the original two movies telling AXS TV’s The Big Interview With Dan Rather that: “There is a possibility of a reunion with the three remaining Ghostbusters… It’s being written right now.”

A third Ghostbusters movie has been rumoured ever since the release of Ghostbusters II in 1989, although it’s typically been derailed by Bill Murray’s lack of interest in another outing. Murray did however make a cameo appearance in the Paul Feig-directed reboot (as did Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts), and despite his past reluctant, Aykroyd believes that “Billy will come. The story’s so good. Even if he plays a ghost.”

It had been thought that the passing of Harold Ramis in 2014 had ended any chance of a Ghostbusters 3, although director Ivan Reitman did suggest at the 2017 San Diego Comic-Con that new live-action and animated Ghostbusters movies were in the works and that Sony was hoping to capitalise on the series’ 35th anniversary in 2019. That being said, we’re just six weeks out from the New Year, and so the studio will need to get things moving quickly if that is to be the case.

Are you interested in seeing Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson reuniting for a third Ghostbusters movie? Or has that Ghost ship sailed? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
