D.J. Caruso to direct Are You Afraid of the Dark? movie

December 16, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Last year it was announced that Paramount had tapped screenwriter Gary Dauberman (Annabelle, It) to write a script for a big screen adaptation of the 90s Nickelodeon show Are You Afraid of the Dark?, and now it seems the project may have secured a director.

According to Bloody Disgusting, Disturbia and xXx: Return of Xander Cage director D.J. Caruso is currently in talks to helm the film, and – given that Paramount is targeting an October 2019 release – the studio will presumably be keen to lock the director in place as soon as possible.

Are You Afraid of the Dark? is a horror-fantasy anthology series which ran for seven seasons between 1990 and 2000 and revolved around a group of teenagers who called themselves ‘The Midnight Society’, and would assemble at night to tell each other scary stories based on fairytales and urban legends but with a modern twist.

In addition to Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Caruso is attached to reunite with his xXx: Return of Xander Cage star Vin Diesel for a fourth instalment in the action series, which is also expected to shoot in 2019.
