D.J. Caruso to direct Are You Afraid of the Dark? movie

Last year it was announced that Paramount had tapped screenwriter Gary Dauberman (Annabelle, It) to write a script for a big screen adaptation of the 90s Nickelodeon show Are You Afraid of the Dark?, and now it seems the project may have secured a director.

According to Bloody Disgusting, Disturbia and xXx: Return of Xander Cage director D.J. Caruso is currently in talks to helm the film, and – given that Paramount is targeting an October 2019 release – the studio will presumably be keen to lock the director in place as soon as possible.

Are You Afraid of the Dark? is a horror-fantasy anthology series which ran for seven seasons between 1990 and 2000 and revolved around a group of teenagers who called themselves ‘The Midnight Society’, and would assemble at night to tell each other scary stories based on fairytales and urban legends but with a modern twist.

In addition to Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Caruso is attached to reunite with his xXx: Return of Xander Cage star Vin Diesel for a fourth instalment in the action series, which is also expected to shoot in 2019.
