Iron Man screenwriters to script Masters of the Universe movie

January 11, 2019 by Gary Collinson

After launching its own film division last year, Mattel has now enlisted screenwriters Art Marcum and Matt Holoway to write a new draft of the long-planned Masters of the Universe movie, based upon the classic 80s toy line.

Marcum and Holoway recently penned the script for Sony’s Men in Black: International, while their past credits include Iron Man and Transformers: The Last Knight.

A new Masters of the Universe movie has been in the works for over a decade now, having passed through the hands of numerous writers and directors, including John Stevenson (Kung Fu Panda), Jon M. Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation), Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2), McG (Charlie’s Angels) and David S. Goyer (Blade: Trinity).

Aaron Nee and Adam Nee (Band of Robbers) are currently attached to direct the movie, having boarded the project last year. A release date of December 2019 has been set for a while now, but given that the script is now receiving an overhaul, it seems all but certain that the film will be bumped to 2020 (or even later, if it encounters any more problems).

Masters of the Universe was previously adapted for the big screen by Cannon Films back in 2017, with Dolph Lundgren starring as He-Man opposite Frank Langella as Skeletor.
