CBS officially announces Michelle Yeoh’s Star Trek: Discovery spinoff series

January 14, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Back in November it was reported that Michelle Yeoh was in talks to reprise her Star Trek: Discovery role as Philippa Georgiou for a spinoff series centred on her character’s exploits in Starfleet’s Section 31 black ops division, and now CBS All Access has officially announced that the project is in the works.

“I’m so excited to continue telling these rich Star Trek stories,” said Yeoh. “Being a part of this universe and this character specifically has been such a joy for me to play. I can’t wait to see where it all goes — certainly I believe it will go ‘where no woman has ever gone before!’”

“Michelle has shattered ceilings, broken boundaries, and astonished us with her grace and gravitas for decades,” added executive producer Alex Kurtzman. “As a human, I adore her. As an actor, I revere her. [Showrunners Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt] are remarkable, exciting writers who bring a fresh perspective to the world of Star Trek, and we’re all thrilled to explore the next wild chapter in the life of Captain Philippa Georgiou.”

While the status of the Star Trek movie franchise is unclear following the recent reports of Star Trek 4’s cancellation, the sci-fi series looks to have a very bright future. In addition to Star Trek: Discovery and the Georgiou series, Patrick Stewart is set to return as Jean-Luc Picard for his own show, while two animated projects are also in development.
