First-look clip from UK rave culture drama Beats

January 25, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Altitude has unveiled the first clip from Beats, a coming of age drama set against the backdrop of the UK rave scene of the 1990s, which is directed by Brian Welsh (Black Mirror) and stars newcomers Cristian Ortega and Lorn Macdonald alongside Laura Fraser (Breaking Bad), Brian Ferguson (Outlander), Ross Mann (Reverb), Gemma McElhinney (Outlaw King), Amy Mason (Born To Run) and Rachel Jackson (The Party’s Just Beginning).

Best mates Johnno and Spanner (Cristian Ortega and Lorn Macdonald in their feature film debuts) share a deep bond.  Now on the cusp of adulthood, life is destined to take them in different directions – Johnno’s family are moving him to a new town and a better life, leaving Spanner behind to face a precarious future.  But this summer is going to be different for them, and for the country. The explosion of the free party scene and the largest counter-cultural youth movement in recent history is happening across the UK.

Beats premiered at the Rotterdam Film Festival yesterday, and will screen at the Glasgow Film Festival and Dublin International Film Festival before a UK release from May 17th.
