Minesweeper returns as Minesweeper Genius arrives on consoles

February 13, 2019 by Andrew Newton

Did you while away the hours at school or work playing Minesweeper?  Thanks to developer Mgaia Studio and publisher Blowfish Studios it’s possible to relive those memories on consoles with Minesweeper Genius.  This modern take on the classic is available now on Xbox One, Playstation 4 and Nintendo Switch.

In Minesweeper Genius aliens have gained Aristotle’s DNA and cloned him and surrounded his laboratory/prison with explosive land mines.  Players will need to guide Aristotle to the exit by moving from square to square while avoiding a catastrophic boom.  As with the original Minesweeper, there are numbers on each row and column that indicate how many landmines are nearby.

This modern take on Minesweeper introduces special tiles which will create obstacles in Aristotle’s path and will alter or restrict his movement, these can be avoided by using the flags to keep track of hidden hazards.

Players will be able to work their way through 130 standard levels and then, should they feel brave/skilled enough, can tackle the 55 extra difficult stages.  Plus, for those who want to devise their own fiendish map, there is a console-exclusive Custom Level mode, where new puzzles are procedurally generated using adjustable settings.

“Minesweeper Genius takes me back to our uni days, when we’d procrastinate on preparing for exams by trying to conquer the most ridiculous Minesweeper grids possible,” said Ben Lee, CEO, Blowfish Studios. “I look forward to a new generation enjoying Mgaia’s wonderfully original take on this classic experience now that Minesweeper Genius is available for consoles.”

Minesweeper Genius is available now on Xbox One, PS4 and Switch priced £4.99/ $5.99 US/ € 5.99/ $7.99 AUD. Minesweep all the way to our Twitter @FMyth_Gaming.
