Viola Davis will return as Amanda Waller in The Suicide Squad

April 5, 2019 by Ricky Church

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad will be seeing another familiar face returning from the original film. It’s been a rumour for some time, but TheWrap has seemingly confirmed Viola Davis (Widows) will reprise her role as the leader of Task Force X, aka the Suicide Squad, for the sequel.

This news comes after producer Peter Safran described The Suicide Squad as a “total reboot” from the first film. Despite it apparently being a ‘reboot’, Gunn’s film will also see the return of Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang and though Will Smith is not returning Deadshot, Idris Elba (Hobbs & Shaw) is taking over the role. Meanwhile, Margot Robbie has been rumoured to also star in the film as Harley Quinn once again, though that hasn’t been fully confirmed either. She will, however, reprise her Harley Quinn role in next year’s Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).

The Suicide Squad follows a group of supervillains who have been captured by the government and offered time off their sentences in return for performing high-risk and top secret missions. Along with the offer of time off, the villainous members are also compelled to obey by way of explosives planted into their heads. Amanda Waller is the originator of the program and one of the government’s most feared and ruthless operatives.

An as-yet-unconfirmed rumour has suggested that Gunn’s Task Force X will introduce four new characters in Ratcatcher, Nanaue, Polka-Dot Man and Peacemaker, with Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista said to be under consideration to play the latter.

The Suicide Squad is set for release on August 6th 2021.
