Modern Horror Directors You Should Be Watching

November 1, 2019 by EJ Moreno

EJ Moreno on the must-see modern horror directors…

The connection between a director and the horror genre is essential. You can feel when a creator loves horror, and you can quickly tell when someone is faking it. Throughout history, directors have made their mark on the genre through significant pieces of work and passion for creating great scares.

From John Carpenter to Eli Roth, each generation has notable names in horror that are go-to’s for many fans. Recently though, there’s been such bold genre movies from creators that makes it hard to figure out who to watch. Below is a collection of some of the hottest names working, and the directors with work you need to see.

The Soska Sisters

(Must Watch Movies: American Mary, See No Evil 2)

This twisted duo is known for some progressive ventures into horror. They kicked the door in with their debut film, Dead Hooker in a Trunk, and have never looked back. They even helped elevate generic slasher See No Evil with their superior sequel.

Coming up for the pair is a remake of the Cronenberg classic Rabid, which is said to be as graphic as you’d expect. For any comic book fans, Jen and Sylvia Soska are currently working on Black Widow for Marvel Comics. Their work on that series is supposed to be equally as explosive as their films.

Adam Wingard

(Must Watch Movies: You’re Next, Blair Witch, Death Note)

Adam Wingard is continuously knocking on the door of mainstream horror, but never fully coming inside. With 2020’s Godzilla vs. Kong, it will be his next attempt at Hollywood but his years of independent work is why he’s on this list.

From work on anthology movies VHS and ABCs of Death, he proved his style is much-needed. Then You’re Next hit theatres, and genre fans knew Wingard was a force. Sadly, Blair Witch and Death Note didn’t make a splash with as many fans, but he’s never let up and continues to be a must-watch director.

Robert Eggers

(Must Watch Movies: The Witch)

Word of mouth can get you far in this industry, and Robert Eggers’ next horror project has people buzzing. Fresh off a debut at Cannes, The Lighthouse is the next Eggers piece, and it’s said to be just as strong as his first feature, The Witch.

Style is a big part of the modern era of horror. Every director wants to make their mark and separate themselves from the rest, and Robert Eggers is finding that niche with his somber, period piece horror movies. The Witch took the community by storm, and expect his upcoming project to do the same.
